Just a kilometer from Pag’s town center, the archeological site of Old Town Pag stands tall and proud. The Franciscan monastery with the Romanesque Church of St Mary overlooks the town, sea and saltworks, the biggest ones in Croatia.
Old Town Pag takes a big place in the hearts of Pag residents as they honor the tradition of pilgrimages from the Old Town to the “new” Pag on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. The tradition started in 1885 during the cholera pandemic and now serves as a showing of gratitude for all the good things in life.
Many cyclists on trail 31, besides the wonderful Old Town Pag, see numerous pools from Paška solana, a saltwork first mentioned in the 10th century. Now it’s the biggest saltwork in Croatia that produces one of the highest quality salt in the world.
