Cycling Tourism in Valencia with Bikademy Studies

Cycling Tourism in Valencia with Bikademy Studies

Discover cycling tourism in Valencia through Bikademy’s permanent Study and three Special Studies, developed as part of the EU-supported FU-TOURISM project.

Valencia has nearly everything cyclists could want from a destination: historic streets, extensive green spaces, modern architecture, Mediterranean beaches and remarkable natural landscapes beyond the city centre.

In summer 2026, Bikademy transformed these different sides of Valencia into an interactive cycling tourism experience by opening the permanent Bikademy Study Valencia and launching three shorter Special Studies.

Developed as part of the EU-supported FU-TOURISM project, the campaign showcases how digital technology, gamification and rewards can encourage visitors and residents to experience a destination by bicycle.

A different way to explore Valencia by bike

Cycling tourism is often presented through predefined routes. Bikademy takes a different approach.

A Bikademy Study includes selected cultural, natural and local attractions called Exams. Cyclists choose how and when to reach each location, ride there by bicycle and check in through the Bikademy app.

There is no prescribed route and the Exams can be completed in any order. Every participant can shape the experience around their available time, preferred bicycle, interests and cycling ability.

This freedom turns Valencia into an open-air classroom where every ride offers an opportunity to discover another part of the destination.

Bikademy Study Valencia: seven sides of the city

The permanent Bikademy Study Valencia connects seven locations that present the diversity of Valencia:

  • Albufera Natural Park
  • Royal Gardens
  • City of Arts and Sciences
  • Patacona Beach
  • Plaça de la Reina
  • Cabecera Park
  • San Miguel de los Reyes

Together, the seven Exams connect history, architecture, urban nature, Mediterranean culture, the coastline and landscapes beyond the usual tourist areas.

Cyclists can experience the atmosphere of Valencia’s historic centre, ride through some of its best-known green spaces, discover its modern architectural identity and continue towards the beach, the huerta and Albufera Natural Park.

After visiting and checking in at all seven Exams, the cyclist completes the Study and receives the available reward.

Because the Study remains available permanently, visitors can explore it over several days or return to complete it during another visit. It becomes a long-term cycling tourism experience rather than a one-time campaign.

Three Special Studies in Valencia

Before opening the permanent Study, Bikademy launched three Special Studies to introduce the concept and demonstrate how enjoyable it can be to explore Valencia by bicycle.

Each Special Study presented a different side of the destination:

  • Historic Heart of Valencia
  • Green Valencia
  • Valencia by the Sea

A Special Study is a shorter, time-limited Bikademy experience based on a specific theme. It includes three Exams and can be used to highlight cultural heritage, green spaces, coastal attractions, local stories or seasonal events.

The shorter format makes it easy for visitors and residents to participate, while destinations can use it to promote selected locations or create targeted tourism campaigns.

The Valencia Special Studies campaign runs until 15 August 2026.

The two formats complement each other. A Study creates a permanent cycling tourism product, while Special Studies provide fresh reasons to ride, return and discover new parts of the destination throughout the year.

Connecting cycling tourism with local rewards

Rewards provide additional motivation to complete the experience. However, they can also connect cyclists more closely with the destination.

The Bikademy model can include rewards from local businesses, attractions, restaurants and tourism providers. Instead of receiving only a generic prize, cyclists can be introduced to a local product or experience connected with the place they have explored.

Localised rewards can create value across the destination:

  • Cyclists receive a meaningful reward for completing the experience.
  • Local businesses gain visibility and potential new visitors.
  • Tourism organisations connect active exploration with the local economy.
  • Partners become directly involved in the cycling campaign.

The reward therefore becomes more than an incentive, it becomes another part of the destination experience.

Turning cycling tourism into an interactive experience

Cycling infrastructure and suggested routes remain important, but they do not automatically motivate people to start exploring.

Bikademy adds an interactive layer through:

  • Carefully selected places to discover
  • Mobile check-ins at each location
  • Gamification and completion goals
  • Freedom to choose the route and order of locations
  • Rewards for completing the experience
  • Seasonal and thematic campaigns
  • Opportunities for partnerships with local businesses
  • Digital promotion before and during the campaign

For cyclists, this creates a more personal and engaging way to explore Valencia. For destinations, it provides a flexible digital tool connecting cycling tourism, local heritage, active travel and sustainable destination promotion.
