Stara Gradiska is a small town placed near river Sava. And its role in Brodsko – posavska county is small today. But it wasn’t always like that. Stara Gradiska is marked by old baroque fortress, which began to build at 1715. Unlike of those in Slavonski Brod, this fortress covered civilian settlement and because of that it belonged to one of the most significant city centres of Croatian Baroque.
Today it is only partially preserved, and reason is in its infamous history when Fortress was prison in Austrian – Hungary Monarchy, then prison cam during World War II and finally the worst prison in former Yugoslavia. After 1990. prison was abolished so its purpose coud be reassigned in order of development of tourism and local economy, especially because it is located near the border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.
