Bicycle Mayor of Tirana Iden Petraj: Creating a better and sustainable city

Iden Petraj is a Bicycle Mayor of Tirana, Albania, and she is creating a better and sustainable city. Through her organization Cyclists of Tirana creates various events and actions to promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transportation and make Tirana a greener place.

How did you become a Bicycle Mayor of Tirana and what it represents?

I became a Bicycle Mayor through the international organization BYCS, which aims to empower local leaders to drive change and create better cycling cities. As the Bicycle Mayor of Tirana, I represent the city’s cycling community and work to promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transportation and recreation. The approval of the Mayor of Tirana, Mr. Erion Veliaj, was a crucial factor in my appointment as the Bicycle Mayor, as it demonstrates the city’s commitment to promoting cycling culture and improving cycling conditions. The Mayor of Tirana is the number one supporter of the cycling community in the city and has always approved cycling initiatives and changes in the city to support cyclists, such as creating public spaces and removing car parking to make room for cyclists. By working with local authorities and the community, I aim to make Tirana a more bike-friendly city and to encourage more people to take up cycling as a mode of transportation. Through my role, I hope to make a positive impact on the city and contribute to a more sustainable and livable future for Tirana.

What started your love for cycling?

My love for cycling started when I was just a child of 5 years old. I won a bicycle in a competition and started riding it every day. I was drawn to the freedom that cycling represented and the fact that it was a faster mode of transportation compared to walking. I also disliked being confined in a car and the speed and convenience of cycling really spoke to me. From that young age, I developed a deep appreciation for the simple joy of cycling and the sense of liberation it provided.

What activities did you organize through your organization Cyclists of Tirana?

As the Bicycle Mayor of Tirana, through my organization Cyclists of Tirana, I have organized various events and activities aimed at promoting cycling culture and improving cycling conditions in the city. Some of these include bike rides, cycling workshops, and advocacy campaigns to improve cycling infrastructure. Additionally, we have also organized cycling lessons for both kindergartens and adults to encourage more people to take up cycling and to promote bike safety. One of our most successful initiatives has been the initiation and organization of Bike Fest and Bike Fair, which bring together the cycling community and provide a platform for advocacy and education. These events feature bike rides, workshops, and exhibitions, as well as opportunities for people to try out different types of bikes and gear. Another project we have started is conducting interviews with cyclists in the bike lanes of Tirana. The aim of these interviews is to gather insights and feedback from the cycling community and to raise awareness about the importance of cycling in the city. We hope to start this project again soon, as it was well received by the cycling community and helped to promote the benefits of cycling.

In recent years, we’ve seen a growing number of people taking up cycling, which is great to see.

Albania’s focus for cycling tourism development is to promote cycling as a sustainable and enjoyable way to explore the country’s natural and cultural heritage. The government and local organizations are working to create more bike-friendly infrastructure, such as bike lanes and trails, and to promote cycling through events and initiatives.

Do you cycle outside of the city and, if so, can you recommend some great destinations for cycling in Albania?

Yes, I do enjoy cycling outside of the city and Albania offers a variety of scenic routes for cycling enthusiasts. Some of the best destinations for cycling in the country include the rugged beauty of the Albanian Alps, the picturesque coastal region with its stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, and the rural areas surrounding Tirana, which offer a glimpse into traditional Albanian life and culture. These diverse regions of Albania provide ample opportunities for cyclists to explore the country’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
