Sibenik Centre is an impressive blend of incredible cultural heritage, the Mediterranean lifestyle and the sights of the magnificent Sibenik archipelago. The most distinctive spot in Sibenik is The Cathedral of St James, a remarkable example of sacral architecture that is fully built out of stone. It’s a place where Gothic and Renaissance forms successfully blend. No wonder UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List.
The most important builders of the Cathedral were Juraj Dalmatinac and Nikola Firentinac. However, it is an outcome of interchanges of influences between three culturally different regions of Northern Italy, Dalmatia and Tuscany in the 15th and 16th centuries that led to unique and outstanding construction solutions.
Furthermore, there are many iconographic solutions. For example, sculptures of 71 heads on the outside part of the shrine. And let’s not forget, its dome is a symbol of Sibenik.
Together with St Nicholas’ Fortress, the Cathedral was featured in Game of Thrones.
